Privacy Policy

PingTray is built to watch your connection, not you. This policy explains exactly what the app and this website do with data — which is as little as possible.

What the app collects

By default, nothing. PingTray runs entirely on your Mac, has no account and no sign-in, and sends no analytics, telemetry, or crash reports to us or anyone else. One optional feature — iPhone Access — does send data to our server, and it is off until you turn it on. It is described below.

Your target host stays local

The hosts you choose to monitor are stored in your Mac's local app settings. PingTray opens a TCP connection to each on port 443 to measure latency. As long as iPhone Access is off, none of that leaves your Mac: not your hosts, not your IP, not any results.

When you turn on iPhone Access

Switching on iPhone Access lets a paired iPhone see how this Mac is doing, so from then on the Mac reports in to our server roughly once a minute. Each report carries a random device identifier, whether the Mac is awake, the names of the hosts it watches with their online state and latency, its battery level and whether it is plugged in, and its system load and core count. There is no account, so none of it is tied to your name or email — only to that random identifier. Reports are stored for 30 days and then deleted automatically. Turning iPhone Access off, or unpairing from either device, stops the reports and removes the record.

Location sharing

Location is a second switch, off until you turn it on separately, and only meaningful once iPhone Access is on. With it enabled, each report also carries the Mac's last known position and an accuracy radius, so your paired iPhone can show it on a map. A Mac has no GPS: the position is derived from the Wi-Fi networks around it, which is close enough to tell one building from another and no closer. It is used only to answer your own iPhone, is never sold, shared, or used for advertising, and switching the toggle off clears the stored position.

No tracking, no ads

PingTray contains no advertising and no third-party tracking SDKs. It does not use the Advertising Identifier (IDFA) and never asks for tracking permission, because it tracks nothing.
